3-D Character Painting

Using the character concept art, Jack mainly worked to do the actual paintings to the 3-D characters.

Comment from Jack:
Textures are created using the 3D paint option in Maya. In keeping with the simplified and Disney inspired art style I implemented a three- colored approach for each character; a dominating color (like green for the frogs, orange for the fish), a secondary color (mostly used in their underbellies), and a third color (used for the spots and patterns that sets them apart from everybody else).

Comment from Jack:
The two little frogs, Skit and Roy, are painted similarly since they are a “set” and their behavior plays off one another. Ivan has more distinguishing color difference between green and yellow since he is the protagonist and a little bit off due to his appearance.

Comment from Jack:
Bumps are added to the characters, in order to match the look of Maya renders, the contrasts for the bump map were heightened. Special attention were paid to the areas with creases on the character’s back, gradient were added to areas surrounding the bump as to not give a sudden raised “plateau look.” A wicker texture was added to Jed’s hat so give him a rough and tumble look.

Jed has a very rough hillbilly look, in conceptualizing the coloring and the texture of the character a good amount of smudges were added on his pants to give an “ewww” look, even though the audience will probably never see these details, it is still nice knowing that if the camera should accidentally stumble upon him he’d still be prepared, “the show must go on.”

His face has a very reddened hue, hinting his irresponsible drunken condition and the threat of the story point when this madman is leading the creatures headlong into disaster. His boat is orange, which would complement his red bear can and bright yellow hat, the orange will also go well separating the blue of his pants from the blue of the BG, and the blue of the water, leaving only the shape of the boat and the green frogs dragging behind to be focused on.
